Insurance Law Research

State Insurance Statutes

One way to find the insurance laws of specific states is to consult a compendium of insurance laws, such as NAIC Compendium of State Laws on Insurance, Matthiesen, Wickert & Lehrer's Fundamentals of Insurance Coverage in all 50 States (KF1220.P5M38) or a survey, such as 50-State Surveys -- Insurance, on Westlaw.

The National Conference of State Legislators webpage is a good resource for finding summaries of pending legislation and newly-enacted laws on particular topics, such as insurance. The website includes a page devoted to issues and research on banking and insurance.

National Association of Insurance Commissioners

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is the organization of state insurance regulators for the states, Washington DC and U.S. territories.  Its publication, NAIC Model Laws, Regulations and Guidelines contains the text of model laws and model regulations, as well as state adoption tables, legislative history and case annotations.  It is available on Lexis.
