Teaching & Research Support for Faculty

The Library provides a number of tools to help you stay current on legal developments and new scholarship. Information on available current awareness services are included below. However, the best resource may depend on your areas of interest. Your Library Liaison can assist you in determining which resource will meet your needs and help in getting alerts set up.

Legal Scholarship

You can remain current on legal scholarship using two tools available on HeinOnline, the eTOC Alert and SmartCILP.

eTOC Alert:  The eTOC Alert allows you to set up an electronic table of contents for one or more titles available in HeinOnline's Law Journal Library. You will receive an email each time the journal is updated in HeinOnline.

To set up an eTOC Alert you will first need to create a HeinOnline account. Then just locate the law review or journal for which you want to receive alert and select Create eTOC Alert.

SmartCILP: The Current Index to Legal Periodicals (CILP) indexes articles published in over 650 American law journals. Through HeinOnline you can subscribe to a weekly alert of new publications. In addition, you can set up a customized alert by selecting your topics of interest that will send an email with a list of new journal articles on those topics which include links to the full text articles.

To set up a SmartCILP, locate the link to the Current Index to Legal Periodicals on the HeinOnline landing page. From the drop down menu select Create New SmartCILP User and type in your BC email and click Create. You will then be prompted to select the topics, subjects or journals for which you want to receive email alerts each week. You can manage your SmartCILP subscriptions in your MyHein account.

  • Sign in to your Library Catalog Account
  • Enter search terms or journal titles and click search.
  • Click on Save this search.
  • Go to Favorites, and set an alert for this search.
  • Confirm or change your e-mail address.

Google Scholar Alerts

Using Google Scholar you can run either a keyword or advanced search for articles of interest. When viewing your search results select Set Alert, which you'll find on the left-hand side of the screen.

Database Alerts

You also can set up search alerts or individual journal table of contents alerts in many databases from providers like Proquest, Elsevier and Web of Science. You will need to set up an account and log-in, but you can leverage your search time to continue receiving relevant articles and tables of contents from your favorite journals.
